To kill or not to kill

2 weeks into life in Doha and she continues to amaze me... Recently, Mr. Wong, my boss, brought Khoi and I to the Pakistani area in Doha.

We happened to walk pass a shop, nothing on display, with just 2 square segregated area of chickens. Live chickens quacking or chickedeeing away whatever sound they make, can't remember the correct onomatopoetic word.. Whatever..

The next thing that happened was, Mr Wong orders a chicken and the man behind the counter picks one chicken up and asks, "Skin? No?"

Wow, that man is going to kill the chicken, "live" from the Pakistani area in Doha. Cool. Would you eat the chicken if you see it killed in front of you?

so poor thing... i'm sure those birds know it's the place of eventual death. but they like, still eating and fattening themselves hor?

i'm sure it's easier to treat them as meat when you don't witness its death.

when are you going to order one yourself for the soup?

btw the word is 'clucking' :P

There was a time when wet markets in SG allowed pple to choose the chickens we wanted for lunch/dinner. I remember my mother and father picking out chickens, the chickens getting weighed and then the chosen bird gets the knife and boil. The smell of the place was unbearable. And after the whole bird flu drama, no more live birds and live executions at your friendly neighbourhood wet market. Reality bites, esp if you're dinner :)
